Elafonisos is located in the eastern entry of the Lakonia Gulf and North of the island of Kythira. It is separated only by a narrow and very shallow channel from the mainland and the little port of Pounta. The mainland town of Neopolis is also only 4 miles away and can easily be reached with one of the many boats going backwards and forwards at all hours.

On the jetty of the island is the little Byzantine church of Agio-Spiridona.

A sizeable fleet of small fishing boats use this island as its base to supply the big markets around the country with around 350 tons of various kinds of freshly caught fish, and thus also ensuring that the fresh catch of the day is readily available to the many tavernas in Elefonisos port.

Besides having the opportunity to enjoy a fantastic seafood dinner, there are numerous small cafes where you can enjoy the delectable Greek coffee or sip your ouzo and partake of the local delicacy of barbequed octopus.

The beaches of Elefonisis Island are located on the north and south side of the island and depending which way the wind is blowing you have the choice of whether you want to wind-surf or just let the children play in the gentle lapping waves as you relax on the white sandy beach. The beaches are also very child friendly as no vehicles are allowed and the sea is very shallow for meters inwards so that the children will be able to play to their hearts content. Fishing is also very popular and can be enjoyed on most parts of the island.
